Workshop “Costs of Destructive Entrepreneurship and Economic Performance” (31 March 2015, Paris)

Josselin Droff March 9, 2015 Tags: , , , Publications No comments

On 31st March 2015, Centre d’Économie de la Sorbonne (University of Paris 1) and Laboratoire d’Economie Dionysien (University of Paris 8) co-organize a research workshop at the Maison des Sciences Economiques, Paris, dedicated to the “Costs of destructive entrepreneurial activity and economic performance,” a major but underexplored issue in economics.
The title of this workshop refers to William J. Baumol’s article “Entrepreneurship: Productive, Unproductive, and Destructive” (Journal of Political Economy, 1990) in which all conflictual activities (e.g. war, civil war, violent conflicts) and criminal ones (e.g. mafia) were analyzed through the prism of entrepreneurship but in a destructive way.

Thus two questions can be identified:
1) What explains that resources are allocated to this kind of appropriative and conflictual activities?
2) What are the costs and benefits related to such activities?
The recent literature in the political economy of conflicts and crime aims at exploring both questions.

This workshop will take place 106-112 boulevard de l’Hôpital 75013 Paris (6th floor), metro station “Campo Formio” (Line 5).
